Dossie James Bivins was born to Clarence Monroe and Verna Cordelia (Carter) Bivins on October 17, 1931, east of Walters near Beaver Creek and departed this life in Lawton, OK on November 13, 2017 at the age of 86 years and 27 days.
Doss grew up on Beaver Creek before the family moved to the Geronimo area and later on to Walters. He worked for the City of Walters and the REA for a time before turning to self-employment as a hay hauler and trapper. He also did roughnecking for a time at Hobbs, NM.
Doss married Mary Ruth Stapp at Walters in 1952 and to the union 3 children were born. He later married Joanne Stewart on August 11, 1961 in Oklahoma City. She had 3 children previously and they added 2 more for a total of 8 kids in the home.
He enjoyed a lifetime of trapping, hunting and fishing, game calling, making hay and farming, calf roping, and tinkering on cars; he loved making music by singing and playing the guitar, as well as numerous other instruments. He was a member of the Lawton Christian Center.
Doss was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joanne, in 2009; two sons, Dennis Lee Bivins and Michael Keith Welch; and his brother, Cleo Bivins.
Survivors include 3 sons and spouses, Carson Bivins and Loretta of Canadian, TX, Dossie James Bivins, Jr. “Skipper” and JoAnn of Temple, OK, Clarence Bivins “Scooter” and Kim also of Temple; 3 daughters and spouses, Carol Hill and Gary of Calumet, OK, Thresa Stewart Young and Ronald Red Elk of Walters, Cindy Coats and Guy Mars of Kaufman, TX; another daughter-in-law, Melea Welch of Duncan; 16 grandchildren, Kimberly, Blaine, Angela, James Doss, Rachel, Cade, Bree, Ruth Ann, John Shane, Bryan, Josh, Jodie, Heather, Christian, Heather and Nathan; 32 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
