Roberta Brown

Funeral Services at the First Christian Church, Waurika, OK, Friday, January 27 at 11:00 a.m., Pastor Curtis Plant Officiating with burial in the Hastings Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple. Memorial Donations may be sent to the First Christian Church Building Fund, 526 N. Elm, Waurika, OK 73573 or the Hastings Cemetery Association.

 

Roberta Katherine Brown was born to Robert Lee and Verna Katherine (Bridal) Hammond on June 12, 1918 at Navina, OK in the Guthrie area and departed this life in Duncan, OK on January 24, 2017 at the age of 98 years, 7 months and 12 days.

Roberta grew up in the Cashion, OK area, where she graduated from high school in 1935. She then attended Oklahoma A&M receiving a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. She began teaching at Addington for 2 years, then 5 ½ years at Waurika High School where she ran a canning kitchen during WWII. She was then at Washington, OK, for a semester before she married Thomas Woodrow Brown on February 7, 1948 at Wichita Falls, TX. To the union 3 children, Kathleen Dianne, Thomas Lee and Arthur Robert, were born.

Mrs. Brown continued teaching, filling in for a semester at Gold-Burg School in Texas and then 2 years at Tishomingo High School. The family moved around to several states while Tom finished up a career in the Air Force, eventually buying a farm in the Red Store Community which Roberta has called home since the mid to late 1950’s. From 1960 to 1979 she served as itinerate librarian for Clay County, TX, schools.

She was an active member of First Christian Church to the end and was involved in many capacities, such as, serving as an officer in the Christian Women’s Fellowship, VBS, nursery and helped coordinate church dinners of which she was known for her homemade rolls. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, and enjoyed gardening and canning. She was also ready, willing and able to do any chores necessary on the farm. Roberta was always involved in her communities and with 4H. She has also enjoyed seeing needs of others around her and fulfilled them.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom; and 2 sisters, Rosalie Burgess and Lena Short.

Survivors include 3 children, Kathy Frusher of Jetmore, KS, Tom Brown of Cashion, OK and Bob Brown of Hastings, OK; 9 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; many other relatives and friends.
