Hugh Fitzsimons

Funeral Services at the First United Methodist Church, Walters, Tuesday, May 17 at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Brantley Tillery officiating and eulogy by Gerald Hayes. Interment with Military Honors at the Walters Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters. Memorial donations can be made to the Walters Education Foundation or the Walters Cemetery.

 

 

 

Hugh Frenchie Fitzsimons was born to James Frenchie and Sallie Kate (Denson) Fitzsimons on March 14, 1925 in Laredo, TX and departed this life on Friday, May 13, 2016 in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 29 days.

 

Coming from Texas, Hugh grew up at Walters from the age of 6 and graduated from WHS in 1943. He entered the United States Army, serving his country honorably during WWII. Upon his discharge from service he began attending the University of Oklahoma from which he received a Bachelor’s of Law degree. Hugh was a member of the Bar Association for 60 years, practicing Law in Walters for 55 years, and also served several years as Assistant DA for Cotton County.

 

He married Nettie Mae Sherwin on December 26, 1953 at Elk City, OK and to the union 2 children were born. Together the couple enjoyed walking for exercise every evening. He was also an avid OU Football fan, loved snake hunting, bike riding and going out to eat every Friday night. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Walters. He was also a proud veteran and a POW of WWII.

 

He was preceded in death by his parent; his wife Nettie Mae on September 6, 1986; a brother J.S. Fitzsimons; and a sister, Thelma Daugherty.

 

Survivors include a son, Keith Fitzsimons of Edmond, OK; a daughter, Nancy Fitzsimons of Kennesaw, GA; a niece, Freda Meyer of Walters; 2 great nephews and a great niece, Rick Meyer of Belmar, NJ, J. Fred Meyer of Dallas, TX and Leanne Meyer of Walters; other relatives and friends.
