Cleeta Joy (Dillow) Gammill was born on February 10, 1926, in Devol, OK, to John “Melvin” and Gladys Irene (Taylor) Dillow. She departed this life on April 17, 2025, at her home, surrounded by family.

Both of her parents were Pioneers to Oklahoma. Gladys came from Iowa to Oklahoma in 1901 and Melvin came from Texas in 1907. Cleeta grew up in Devol OK and was active in her school theatre, girls’ basketball team and also learned to play the piano. She graduated from Devol High School in 1944. While attending high school, Cleeta met her future husband, Lynn Lee

Gammill. The sweethearts were married on Christmas Day, December 25, 1943, at Cleeta’s childhood home in Devol. The first two years of their marriage were spent at various army bases around the US as Lynn was an enlisted soldier during WW2. After the war, they made their home on their farm in the Ahpeatone Community, 14 miles west of Walters, OK.

Cleeta joined the Homesteaders Extension Club and served in all capacities for 60 years. She was also a member of the Cotton County Fair Board for 30 years, even serving as Vice-President for a time; and she was the Canning Superintendent at the fair for at least 50 years. Additionally, she volunteered for the Cotton County Election Board at her local polling place in Cookietown, OK, for elections. Cleeta was also very involved in the Ahpeatone Baptist Church as a pianist, choir singer, Sunday School teacher and church clerk for more than 70 years. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, genealogy, gardening and going fishing as often as possible.

Of all Cleeta’s accomplishments, she considered being a farm wife and mother her greatest. Cleeta & Lynn raised their three children on the family wheat farm: Lynda Joy, David Jarrol and Kevin Blane. She spent many days cooking for her family in the field, driving the wheat truck when needed and all while still tending to her children, family, community, and everyday tasks. She often said her faith and her family were her greatest blessings.

Cleeta was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Loye Estelle Dorr; her brother, Jarrol Melvin Dillow; her husband, Lynn; and her beloved daughter, Lynda.

She is survived by her son David and his wife Debbie, and her son Kevin and his wife Ann, all of Chattanooga OK; as well as 7 grandchildren: Cheryl Johnson Schoonover, Christi Johnson McGhee, Mandi Gammill, Adam Gammill, Josh Gammill, Katy Gammill Cope and Hope Gammill Williams. Cleeta also has 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2025, at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel in Walters, OK. Interment to follow at the Walters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Walters Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 485, Walters, OK 73572.
