Graveside Services in the Devol Cemetery, Friday, July 5, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters, OK. Viewing on Wednesday, July 3rd, beginning at 9:00 am with visitation that evening from 6-8:00 pm. Viewing on Thursday, July 4th from 2-4:00 pm. 

Donnie Noel “Cowboy” McGill was born to Ruben Arthur “Rube” and Ethel Mozelle (Noel) McGill on November 8, 1934 in rural Randolph County, AL and departed this life in Wichita Falls, TX on July 1, 2020 at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 23 days.

Cowboy grew up in Randolph County, AL, graduating from Wadley High School. He married Joan Maxine Langley on October 31, 1953 in Wadley. He soon joined the U. S. Air Force in 1954 and ended up stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base, making their home in the Wichita Falls/Burkburnett, TX area. They owned T&O Grocery in Burkburnett for a time and he was also trained by Payton Cosby to be a plumber. They eventually moved to Devol, OK in 1962. He started his own plumbing business called Cowboy Plumbing, doing contract plumbing and also ran the water systems for Randlett and Devol. He opened a plumbing supply location in Wichita Falls from 1978 to 1981 and soon retired from the profession. With the help of Joan and the kids, he also did custom harvesting and hay hauling, as well as, catering under the name of Cowboy’s Barbeque. He was also proud to have cared for the grounds and records of the Devol Cemetery for many years.

Cowboy was a member of Devol Baptist Church, and in his later years, enjoyed attending Texoma Cowboy Church. He enjoyed going to the lake on the weekends with the family and spending time fishing and skiing, and also enjoyed hunting quail. He loved teaching kids how to ski and teaching them gun safety. He enjoyed attending all the sporting events of his kids and grandkids that he possibly could through the years. 

Cowboy was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; his parents, Rube and Mozelle McGill; 4 siblings and their spouses, James Frank “Jim” McGill and wife Helen, Agnus McGill Nunn and husband Gordon, an infant sister Nancy Jane McGill, and Max McGill; and his grandson, DJ Hickerson. 

Survivors include 6 children and their spouses, Debra and Terry Hodnefield of Devol, Donna and Stephen Dilks of Cookietown, OK, Diana McGill of Temple, TX, Donnie and Darcy McGill of Devol, Deena and Trip Grant of Devol, Danna and Joe Thompson of Temple, OK; his brother, Larry McGill and wife, Gail; his sisters-in-law, Mailey Ann Langley, Gaynan Craven, Kaye Cooper and husband Mitchell all of Wadley, AL; 8 grandchildren and spouses, Stephanie and Brian Davis, Stephen Lynn and Tiffany Dilks, Shane and Christann Dilks, Dannie and Britten McGill, Jody and Chuck Cooley, Dillon McGill, Danielle and Austin Ford, and Quay Grant; 12 great grandchildren, Easton, Ruston and Roxton, Huntley, Ella and Everett, Jessi and Toby, James, William and Zelma, Callen and one on the way; his Chocolate Lab, Luke; many beloved nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
