Sims Slaton was born on October 3, 1951 in Dallas, TX to William Tenison Slaton Sr. and Janet Sims Slaton. Sims departed this life at his home in Temple, OK on December 14, 2025 at the age of 74 surrounded by his loving family.
Sims grew up in Dallas where he attended Christ the King Catholic Elementary School and then finished his primary education at Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving, TX. Sims started his college education at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and ultimately received his degree from the University of Denver in Colorado. Sims spent the majority of his life working in construction and owned Slaton Building Systems (SBS) with his brother Dwight for many years. For the last 20+ years he worked the Pro Desk at Home Depot in Dallas, Wichita Falls, and most recently in Lawton, OK.
He met his soulmate Gwendolyn Williams Wiley in the winter of 1995 and they later married on August 26, 2005 in Walters, OK. Altogether, Sims and Gwen have 6 children: Preston Kemp Slaton, Paul Tanner Slaton (Amber), Sarah Elizabeth Carney (Andrew), Rick Wayne Wiley (Dawn), Phil Jack Wiley, and Russell Lee Wiley (Angela). He leaves behind 14 grandkids, Tristan, Ashton, Zain, Kason, Sasha, Kaitlyn, Jadyn, Jarid, Taylor, Dillon, Rusty, Randy, Hailey, and Madison and 7 great-grandkids. He is survived by his siblings William Tenison “Buddy” Slaton Jr. (Diann) of Dallas, TX; and Dwight Edward Slaton (Ann) of Montgomery, TX. in addition to numerous other relatives and a large host of loving friends who are like family.
For those who knew Sims he had an enormous love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, downhill skiing, as well as woodworking, art, and spending time in the garden with Gwen.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Deborah Ann Thompkins; his mother, Janet Sims Slaton; his father, William Tenison Slaton Sr.; and his oldest son, Preston Kemp Slaton.
Viewing will be available at the Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple, Oklahoma on Wednesday, December 17, from 1-8pm, Thursday, December 18 from 9am-8pm and a visitation, with family present, on Friday, December 19, from 11am-12:30pm to be followed by graveside services at 1pm in the Hastings Cemetery, Hastings, OK.
