Myra Lucille “Lucy” McKay was born to James Lee Kays Jr. and Myra Dean (Hockman) Kays on October 24, 1951 in Pampa, TX and departed this life in Lawton, OK on August 25, 2025 at the age of 73 years, 10 months and 1 day.

Lucy grew up in Pampa and Oklahoma City, then moved in with her grandparents, graduating from Mountainview in 1969. She went on to attend Southwestern for her bachelor’s degree in education and later earned a master’s degree. She taught school at Ft. Cobb for a time before getting into management with Hop & Sack in Carnegie, later being transferred to run the Hop & Sack in Temple in the 1980’s. There she met Dennis McKay and they married at the courthouse in Lawton on January 9, 1989.

Lucy taught school at Davidson for 2 years before the couple moved to Las Vegas for his job where she continued teaching. She was a reading specialist and especially enjoyed teaching junior high. She and Dennis returned to Oklahoma in 2021, making their home in rural Hastings. She enjoyed crafting, crocheting, spending time at home and sitting out on the porch.

She was preceded in death her parents; infant twin brothers, Danny Lee and Randy Dean Kays; and her sister, Claurica Yoakum.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis McKay of the home; 2 sons, Thomas Stephens and Carrie of Alfalfa, OK, and Terry Stephens and Shawna of Yukon, OK; 2 brothers, Ronald Kays and James “Pat” Kays both of Bakersfield, CA; her father-in-law, Billy McKay of Temple; her Uncle Herman McKay; 7 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
