Horace Richard Fletcher was born to Elmer Bradley and Alice Beatrice (Newsom) Fletcher on June 9, 1933, in Walters and departed this life in Wichita Falls, TX on January 25, 2022, at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 16 days.

Richard grew up at Walters, graduating from WHS in 1953. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 which included service in Tokyo, Japan working as a cartographer. He then transferred to the Army Reserves, serving until 1961.

Richard headed to West Texas where he began a long career with Phillips Petroleum. He married and had two sons, Wayne and Delwyn, while working in the Permian Basin Oilfield near Goldsmith and Rankin, Texas. On November 5, 1966, he married Hazel Marie Fisher in Midland, TX and to the union a daughter, Ann Marie was born. Throughout Richard’s career he worked in many places including Kenai, AK, Chatom, AL, Stavanger, Norway, and Borger, TX. He served as plant superintendent in Oklahoma City, Chickasha, and Seiling, OK before retiring in 1988.

He and Hazel moved to Walters in 1995, building a home. Hazel preceded him in death on March 15, 2008. He later married Peggy June (Lee) Klein on October 29, 2011, in Walters where they made their home until moving to Ardmore, OK and then eventually Wichita Falls, TX in 2018.

Richard’s love for football began with playing for the Walters Blue Devils. He also played basketball and baseball while in school. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, trap shooting, reloading, and reading. He was an avid OU Sooner, Dallas Cowboy, and New York Yankees fan.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings, his son, Richard Wayne Fletcher; his wife, Hazel; and stepson, Richard Klein Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Fletcher of Wichita Falls, TX; a son, Raymond Delwyn Fletcher and Catherine of Glennwood Springs, CO; his daughter, Ann Marie McMillan and Allyn of Burkburnett, TX; stepdaughter-in-law, Cory Klein of Grapevine, TX; stepdaughter-in-law, Ginger Thomas and John of Stillwater, OK; a sister-in-law, Peggy Lee; his grandchildren, Angie, Jennifer, Amanda, Dylan, Adalyn, Shelby, Madison; 4 great grandchildren Devin, Christian, Madeleine, Jace; and other relatives and friends.
