Vonnie Zachary

December 9, 1938 — March 20, 2019

Lillian Yvonne "Vonnie" Zachary was born to William Clae and Verda Mae (Hudson) Claiborne on December 9, 1938, in Odessa, TX and departed this life on March 20, 2019 in Oklahoma City at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 11 days.

Vonnie grew up in several towns as her dad worked in the oilfield. Their family made their way to Duncan and eventually Walters when she was 13 and in the 7th grade. She graduated from WHS in the Class of 1956. Vonnie married Lindel Spincer Zachary on July 2, 1956 at Walters. A year later they moved to Oklahoma City for a time before moving to California for a short stint, quickly returning to Walters.

Vonnie did babysitting for several kids through age 6 to include Steve and Keith Sanderson, Margaret Ann Moore, Jana and Russell Philpott, and Karissa Copeland. She also worked at Armstrong’s, Lady Bug Flowers and Gifts, and worked 15 years for DHS. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and faithfully read her Upper Room Daily Devotional every night. She loved her family, her church and loved people. She always enjoyed drinking coffee and visiting with her best friends and playing bridge with her girlfriends (also known as the Slim Jims). She enjoyed bird watching, sewing, and keeping a beautiful yard. She loved trips to the farm and was the best gate opener. She was also a wonderful cook. Vonnie loved her grandkids and taught them all how to use colorful adjectives. They knew her as “My.”

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Patsy Lee Ford.

Survivors include her husband, Lindel, of the home; her son and daughter-in-law, Clayton and Karen Zachary of Fairview, TX; her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Bryan Ogletree of Ardmore, OK; her sister, Judith Andruss and husband Jim of Placentia, CA; 7 grandchildren, Spencer Zachary and wife Kathleen of McKinney, TX, Zack Stowers of Stillwater, OK, Jenna Stowers of Lindsay, OK, Blakelee Stowers of Stillwater, OK, Quaid Ogletree of Walters, OK, Jill Ogletree and Chase Ogletree both of Lindsay, OK; 1 great granddaughter, Ava-Grace Zachary; cousins and best friends, Pat Zachary and Ann Hayes; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mickie and Clint Abbe, Judy and Wayne Dilbeck, Janet Sue Smith, and Shirley Zachary; many other relatives and friends.
